Finally going to a latin mass!
QUESTION from David on June 7, 2004

I'm finally getting to go to an old-style "tridente" mass: I have never been and am wondering what the major differences between the "new" and "old" masses are? I'm hoping you can show me the "loops" so I don't look like a fool at mass: I don't handle embarressment well.

Anyway, thanks for looking at this and God Bless!

Dear David:

I do not think I can really give you a tutorial for the Roman Missal of 1962 on the Q&A Forum, but do not worry about not knowing what to do. Basically, I would suggest that you sit in one of the back pews and keep an eye on what the others do. If there is a Latin/English missal you might follow along in that.

One big difference, however, is that the Roman Missal of 1962 does not have the kind of participation of the Faithful that is experienced in the current Mass; acolytes will say the "peoples" part for you. That was one of several reasons for the reform -- since greater participation of the Faithful is actually MORE traditional and ancient than the "traditional" Mass :)

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
