Mary and Genesis 3:15
Dear Brother :
This morning a young man ask me to help him understand the meaning of this statement about the Miraculous Medal:: "Mary is standing upon a globe, crushing the head of a serpent beneath her foot. She stands upon the globe, as the Queen of Heaven and Earth. Her feet crush the serpent to proclaim that Satan and all his followers are helpless before her (Gn 3:15)."
The question: It seems as though, with all the horrific violence in the world perpetrated by Muslims and those opposed to the True God, (EG: the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, the beheading of Nick Berg, etc.) Mary's message seems to be quite anemic. It appears as though the enemies of God are winning and that the Muslims are crushing Mary rather than the other way around. If the statement "Her feet crush the serpent to proclaim that Satan and all his followers are helpless before her (Gn 3:15)." it does not seem that "Satan's followers are helpless before her."
I could sure use some of your thoughts on this. Thank you! All for her!!

Dear Vladimir: The role of our Blessed Mary in crushing the head of Satan refers to the ultimate end of Satan. Between now and then, as Jesus said, "there will be wars and rumors of wars." Even in terms of the Church, God tells us that the gates of hell "shall not prevail". To "prevail" means to win in the end, it does not mean there will not be battles in the meantime, even battles that are lost. We may lose this or that battle, but we shall prevail over Satan in the end because of our Blessed Mother and Jesus, her Son, the Son of God who are crushing and will totally crush the Enemy. Satan has actually already lost the war, because of the Cross and Resurrection, but he still fights battles to try to steal from God as many as he can before the final judgment. Unfortunately he wins some of those battles. Although it may seem that Satan is winning more than just a few battles, and he does certainly win a lot of particular battles, in actuality Satan is defeated in the long run. Our Blessed Mother and her Son are crushing the head of Satan. In the end, Satan's head will be crushed completely, totally defeated, and cast into hell to never bother creation again.
