What is a "tertiary"?
QUESTION from Luis on May 6, 2004

Hello Brother Ignatius,

I have heard the term "tertiary", in the context of some religious organizations (like the carmelites, if I remember correctly). What exactly is that?

Thankyou very much for your help and the wonderful work you do. May God bless you and your apostolate, and give you all the graces and resources you need to keep going, for His greater glory.

Dear Luis:

Tertiary means "third in place". A tertiary order is a Third Order such as the Lay Carmelites. A person called a tertiary is a member of a Third Order.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
