"The Story of Christianity"--Gonzalez
QUESTION from Jane OPL May 27, 2001

Are you familiar with "The Story of Christianity" by Justo L. Gonzalez (Harper; 1984)? If so, please comment on the reliability of the author and the book. I was given a copy and would appreciate a good opinion as I proceed in reading it. Thank you, Jane

            ANSWER by Q & A Staff on June 14, 2001

Dear Jane,

Justo L. Gonzalez is a Protestant professor on the faculty of the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta. I have not read this book but am aware that it is highly thought-of.

Since Dr. Gonzalez is a Protestant, I presume he writes with a Protestant viewpoint. However it seems from reviews I have read that he is not an anti-Catholic writer.

The most reliable history of Christianity available today, from a Catholic perspective, is Warren Carroll's "History of Christendom" series, available from www.christendom.edu

Another good author is Philip Hughes, but his books are out of print now.

I hope this helps. If there are any specific questions regarding the content of Dr. Gonzalez's book, please feel free to ask me about them.

God bless,
.
