Possible Mortal Sin
QUESTION from Josh on May 16, 2004

It's actually really important that I have an answer on this ASAP. It's
concerning a possible mortal sin.

This girl and I have been really good friends. She and I would spend all day
together, and occassionally she'd sleep on my couch because she was too tired to go him. I recently discovered that this could be a mortal sin. Doesn't the Church ban non-married men and women living together? We weren't living together, but she would sleep at my house on occassion.
I'm really nervous about this.

Now, concerning your question, it is not a sin for a man and woman to live together (even a boyfriend and girlfriend) AS LONG AS there is no scandal caused and the couple does not fornicate.

It is not too prudent to live together with a boy/girl friend and it places one in the near occasion of sin, but it is not mortal or venial sin unless scandal is caused or the couple fornicates.

The case that you are describing is not about living together, but about your girlfriend sleeping over on the coach because she is too tired to go home.

There is no sin in this unless you fornicate or a great scandal is caused.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
