Forthcoming Divine Office revisions.
QUESTION from Lee on May 22, 2004

The situation regarding the Divine Office revisions is as follows.

The Latin edition appeared in 1971. It was very promptly translated into English for the USA (1975).

A new edition appeared in 1985. It incorporates many new texts in the body of the breviary as well as a few new saints.

Since 1985, about 20 additional offices for new saints have been published by Rome.

In what could justly be called a liturgical scandal, going on 20 years now this new edition of the Divine Office remains unavailable in an English translation (not just the USA's fault either; England and Ireland lack a translation of the new edition either).

So, strangely, while the currently-published USA edition remains perfectly correct for Americans praying the Office, it is also 20 years out of date with the Vatican edition.

The new feasts include the Holy Name (3 Jan.), the Holy Name of Mary (Sep. 12), Josephine Bakhita (Feb. 8), BVM Fatima (May 13), Mexican Martyrs (May 21), Rita of Cascia (May 22), Chinese Martyrs (July 9), Apollinaris of Ravenna (July 20), Sharbel Mahklouf (July 24), Padre Pio (Sept. 23, obligatory), Catherine of Alexandria (Nov. 25). Further, Jane de Chantal is transferred from Dec. 12 to Aug. 12.

On a final note, the most significant change from the official Latin version to the official English version is the issue of the hymns. The Latin Office has proper hymns for many, many saints. The English edition often substitutes what were considered standard musical fare for Catholics c. 1975, rather than offering a translation of any of these many hymns from the original.

Dear Lee:

The use of the word "scandal" is hardly appropriate or accurate, and all of the New Feasts that you list ARE included in our Calendar and only one of those have not been translated into English as yet.

Holy Name (3 Jan.) is mentioned in the 2004 Ordo with a note that an English translation is not yet approved.

The following are not in the 2004 Ordo because their feasts fall on a Sunday this year:
Holy Name of Mary (Sep. 12)
Josephine Bakhita (Feb. 8)

The following are all listed in the 2004 Ordo:
BVM Fatima (May 13)
Mexican Martyrs (May 21)
Rita of Cascia (May 22)
Chinese Martyrs (July 9)
Apollinaris of Ravenna (July 20)
Sharbel Mahklouf (July 24)
Padre Pio (Sept. 23, obligatory),
Catherine of Alexandria (Nov. 25)

and..

Jane de Chantal's Feast is August 18 in the United States

For the two that fall on Sunday this year and for the Holy Name Feast that hasn't been translated yet, are listed, with all the others, in the official Supplement found at: Click here

As for the Hymns, if does not matter what hymns are used as long as they are approved. Personal preferences are of no importance.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
