re: Biblical authority and sacred tradition
QUESTION from James on April 24, 2004

To follow up Bek's question:

Second Timothy 3:15 tells us that all sacred scripture is capable of giving us wisdom for salvation - it does not say ONLY sacred scripture can do this (and earlier in this same passage Paul refers to the oral instruction Timothy has received from him).

FIRST Timothy 3:15 says ". . .you should know how to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of truth."

Here, scripture itself tells us that it is the CHURCH that is "the pillar and foundation of truth." We can see that this is true if we consider all the "Bible believing" churches that have completely different understandings of what sacred scripture actually means (including some like the Jehovah's Witnesses, whose doctrines can't really be considered Christian).

Also consider Luke 4:10, which shows that even Satan can quote scripture to serve his purposes!

Dear James:

Thanks for the additional comment on the subject.

The Bible Alone doctrine is totally man-made notion. In fact, the Bible tells us (St. Paul) that not everything Jesus taught is written in Scripture (John 21:25), and that we are to hold fast to tradition written or oral (2 Thess 2:15), and to shun people who refuse to act according to Tradition (2 Thess 3:14). Also the Corinthians were commended for following Apostolic Tradition (1 Cor 11:2), etc., etc.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
