converting
QUESTION from Rose on October 4, 2003

My future daughter-in-law is converting, I am her sponsor. We attended R.C.I.A. class together last evening, and I was very disappointed with the development of the class and the instructor. An older priest is teaching the course. All he has the candidates do is read from the book and repeat lines of prayer after him--he is treating them all as though they have no religious background or education, like children! There's no religious discuss happening, only his instruction.I want to know where I can find some good reading material for her about Catholicism before she is completely turned off.

Dear Rose:

Sorry to hear about this. Unfortunately one is required to undergo RCIA or some other instruction in order to convert.

Without knowing the background of your candidate it would be hard to recommend a specific book. There are many that specialize in information concerning Fundamentalism, for example.

I would suggest browsing through a good Catholic bookstore and perhaps ask the clerk or owner what they may recommend.

There are also online bookstores such as Catholic Store

One book that I would recommend giving to her is the 2nd Edition of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. EVERY Catholic should have this book.

I would also get her Father Hardon's Catechism. He writes so wonderfully and helps people to understand the issues in the Catechism.

There is also a Bible Study by Scott Hahn and others at: St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology

The tapes from Scott Hahn will knock your socks off and get anyone "on fire" for God and for the Catholic Church. Most of these can be found at St. Joseph Communications

This should get your started.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
