Mary's virginity-Jewish law

I do beleive that Mary stayed a virgin for the rest of her life but you say that when Jesus was dieing on the cross He handed Mary to John and you say that if He had not have He would have broken Jewish law. Where in the old testament does it say that it is wrong to do so? The answer to this question would be very helpful when answering non-Catholics. Thank you and God bless you.
