Receiving the Host
My husband takes communion more than once a day. Sometimes he goes to a special event, like a wedding, and then he goes to a later evening mass on that day. I always thought you could ohly receive the host once in one day. I don't know who is right, but I don't like to see my husband misinformed in this situation either. Can you tell me what the rules are about the frequency of receiving communion on any given day, and if there are exceptions to the rule for special occasions? Thank you very much for your time and effort in answering this question. I've been wondering about it for a very long time. Charlotte

Dear Charlotte, There is nothing wrong with what your husband is doing as far as I see. In the past, yes there WAS a rule that Communion could only be received once per day, but this has changed. I've been told that people were going to church and receiving Communion many many times in one day, and it was getting out of hand. Anyway, the rule today is that Communion may be received a second time, but for the second time it must be received during Mass.
A person who has received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of can. 921, 2. (Code of Canon Law, n. 917) Can 921 says:
