The New Girm
Regarding the new GIRM and the Rite of Peace. It was my understanding that it was optional because it used to say that "the Priest MAY" exchange the sign of peace. I talked with a priest recently because at times he would omit it during daily mass. However, he said that per the new instructions there is no mention of doing it or not doing it. I have looked for those instructions on the UCCB GIRM http://www.usccb.org/liturgy/current/chapter2.htm#sect3c
QUESTION from Charles on May 7, 2004
and #82 gives instructions as how the sign of peace should be given. There is nothing as to what the priest should do.
Where will I find the instructions that the priests are to follow. Are there separate instructions for the Priest that includes the word "May"? If so can you direct me to them?
Thank you and God Bless.

Dear Charles, If all present offer to each other the sign of peace, then the priest does also with the ministers nearby. If not, I believe the priest may still offer it to other clergy present after saying "The peace of the Lord be with you always" with its response. Mr. Slavek |
