Cannon Law Latin
QUESTION from Kristen on April 2, 2004

I recently read this and wondered if it is in the current code of cannon law or if they were quoting from an earlier edition.
Code of Canon Law

Can. 249 - The program for priestly formation is to make provision that the students are not only carefully taught their native language but also that they are well skilled in the Latin language; they are also to have a suitable familiarity with those foreign languages which seem necessary of useful for their own formation or for the exercise of their pastoral ministry.

ANSWER by Mr. Jacob L. Slavek on April 7, 2004

Dear Kristen,

This is indeed from the new current code. Seems to me that all seminarians are required to learn Latin... I know many seminaries support this but of course there are many priests ordained in the last twenty-thirty years that have no knowledge of Latin at all.

Latin truly is a beautiful language; anyone who has studied this knows this, even if they struggle with the grammar! It is also a sacred language, the official language of the church and the universal language of the church. It is also a language of the educated, whether they be Catholic or not. In my opinion anyone in college should learn Latin, and CERTAINLY anyone studying religion.

By the way the laity can also learn and pray in Latin.... start with the "Ave Maria".

Mr. Slavek
