Organ during Lent
I play the organ at my church. I have recently been told that during Lent, the organ may only be used to accompany singing. Obviously, this eliminates preludes and postludes. What about if a hymn, at communion for example, ends before the priest is finished? Am I allowed to continue playing as I usually do? I would no longer be supporting singing at that point.
I believe this rule comes from the Ceremonial of Bishops. Do you know if this document is available online somewhere?
Thank you for your help.

Dear Brent, You would not be playing at all then during this time once the singing is finished. This is found in "Paschales Solemnitatis" which is available online. Also, the Ceremonial of Bishops is a hardcover published book, not a "document" at least as we use the word document normally. I really doubt that its text is available on the Internet. Larger catholic bookstores should have it though. Mr. Slavek |
