Funeral Mass Incensing
QUESTION from Larry on Rev. Mr

Greetings Jacob...

When recently assisting at a funeral Mass the question came up as to when we now can/have to incense the remains, etc. We are currently incensing at the offeratory - the gifts and the remains. Our pastor recently said that we cannot do that and that we have to now incense at the end of the Mass.

Is there a change? Can you shed some light on this?

Thanks and blessings,

Deacon Larry

Dear Larry,

The Order of Christian Funerals states that incense MAY be used at these times.

But honestly I can't think of a good reason not to use it, especially since the Order also states that incense is used as a sign of honor to the body of the deceased and as a sign of the prayers rising to the throne of God as a sign of farewell.
