Incense!
What ever has happened to the use of incense at Mass? I don't know about other Catholic parishes, but in ours it is hardly ever used - and when it is, only in very small amounts.
Why isn't incense used now? I have asked our priest and he says it's because of people in the congregation who suffer from respiratory problems (e.g. asthma). Other people have suggested it's because acolytes and servers are no longer properly trained in how to use it.
I truly love the Mass, and I realise that the most essential part of the Mass is the Eucharist (and the reading of the Word). This is the "cake" - so to speak. Incense is only the icing on top - but what lovely icing it is. When incense is used, it does something to me - spiritually. I can pray better! I apologise if this sounds strange. At times, I almost feel I'm on a "high" when incense is used. I love the stuff!
I look forward to your reply.
God bless you richly - and happy New Year!

Dear Doug, I suppose there are many reasons why incensed is no longer widely, I suspect that laziness is near the top. It does take a lot of work, and young servers would need to be supervised since it is dangerous. I wish the that parishes would get back into the "habit" of using incense on Sundays, getting everyone properly trained would make it a lot easier. Mr. Slavek |
