Applauding the Choir after Mass
Dear Mr. Slavek,
I am a devout R.C. who attends Mass faithfully each week with my family. I am disturbed by some of the non-traditional practices creeping into the solemnity of the Mass. (ie: hand-holding during the "Our Father")
My question is pertaining to what many have started to do in my Church: after the Mass has ended and we, as a congregation, have finished singing the last song, and the Choir has finished their playing/singing, many people will start to applaud (clap enthusiastically)the Choir. Inwardly I cringe whenever this happens. We have not just attended a concert or been in Church for our entertainment. The whole congregation, as one voice, has participated in singing to the Lord -- not just the Choir. So am I just being overly sensitive in this issue, or is it improper for many to clap in applause (and appreciation) for the lovely music provided for us by the Choir? (They do provide very nice music.)
Thanks so much for your response,

Dear Claire, You are correct, it is inappropriate to applaud in church. Pope Pius X was once applauded in church, to which he responded to the people that the servant is not recognized in the Master's presence. Applause actually can be used once in the Liturgy, but it has a specific purpose: the people can voice their consent for the ordination of a candidate to the priesthood with applause. Also, I really hope that the people in your parish and in all others don't have the idea that the choir is singing to the people. They should usually be singing to God and helping the congregation sing. Holy Mass is not supposed to be entertainment. Mr. Slavek |
