RE: Old vs. New??? (Music)
QUESTION from Jim on November 9, 2003

Why is there music anyway? I am not against it at all. But I fail to see the reasoning of what type of "music" makes the mass. Do we need music to celebrate our GOD? Isn't it enough to be able to go to HIS home and speak directly to him in unity with our family, Mother's, Father's, Brother's, Sister's, Daughter's and Son's and more importantly, our neighbor's? Do we need a certian type of music to expres this love for our FATHER?
I would like to think we go to mass mainly to celebrate our love for our FATHER, rather then our "love" of music.

Dear Jim,

As you no doubt know the Church thinks very highly of sacred music. The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy from the Second Vatican Council has an entire chapter on music, and there are many other documents devoted entirely to the subject.

Why is there music anyway? From Sacrosanctam Concilium: To glorify God, and to sanctify the people. Music is a form of worship, just as praying directly with others in church. For most people including myself it is a particularly powerful form of prayer. Certain styles of music allow greater prayer while others are simply disruptive... That is why it is terribly important that music is reverent and not just obnoxious.

Mr. Slavek
