Re: Proper Crucifix
QUESTION from Rosa on November 8, 2003

In reply to Charlie's post from October 22, 2003, you stated that the altar cross MUST have a figure of Christ crucified attached to it.

My parish has had the same Crucifix above the altar at least for my whole lifetime: the cross with Jesus in priestly vestments, and He's not attached to it. He wears a crown, His hands are directed upwards. I'm not sure if this would fit the "Ressurection Cross" category that Charlie brought up previously, but whatever category it does fit, He is certainly not crucified.

I'm guessing that this goes against what the new General Instruction states. (I have absolutely no knowledge in this area so I'm running blind on this one.) The problem then is what is to be done about it. It's a gigantic Cross, taller than the average human being, and it hangs from the tall cieling by metal ropes. It's obviously been there for decades. I don't even know if it can be taken down without putting a hole through the marble altar and the floor below it.

How big of a deal is this? I never saw a problem with it, but then I'm not versed in this area before and therefore have no idea of what I'm talking about... it's not my place to call the shots anyway.

Thank you!

Dear Rosa,

I would probably just leave it there; it's probably quite beautiful. It doesn't have to be used as the altar cross, are you sure there isn't another nearby?
