Inter-Rite Marriages
Dear Mr. Slavek,
I know that this topic may not exactly fit under your judisdiction, but I didn't know where else to ask it. My fiance is Chaldean, and as far as I know, Chaldeans are Eastern Rite Catholics. Recently I have heard that there are some issues regarding intermarriage between Roman Catholics and Eastern Rite Catholics. I have tried to locate the rules on a website that shows the 1983 Code of Canon Law, but I haven't been able to yet. Do you know what the status of inter-rite marriages is? My fiance has not regularly attended the Chaldean Rite for over 10 years. Is there any stipulation for what rite our children will be baptized in?
Thank you so much for any help you can give us.

Dear Kate, Yes, Chaldeans are an Eastern Catholic Rite, they have a different history and traditions and Liturgy, but they are fully Catholic, united with the other Eastern Churhes and the Latin Church under the pope. I don't understand what the problem is, as far as I know inter-rite marriage is possible, and as long as both parents consent, then the children would be Latin. I don't see anything in the 1983 code that denies this. Mr. Slavek |
