Medical Masturbation
QUESTION from David on May 9, 2004

Dear sir,

I have a propencity for a certain type of infection that is exacerbated by a "full" prostate. I have been told by my doctor that for medical reasons, as well as reasons that would releive the irritation and pain and probably help my body fight the disease that I should masturbate.

Needless to say I am slightly concerned because
1) Masturbation is a grave sin.
2) If I were to masturbate that would be opening myself toward impure thoughts (Avoiding occasion of sin? My goodness, there's NO way I'm going to begin masturbating and NOT have impure thoughts).
3) I have (IMHO due to the divine intercession of my patron saint and Saint Anthony of Padua) stopped masturbating... I haven't done so in over 6-9 weeks. In that time, my condition has worsened.

This is a rough one... any thoughts would be welcome.

Thanks

Dear David:

To my knowledge there is no medical condition that REQUIRES masturbation (or women taking the birth control pill). The operative word is "REQUIRE". Although masturbation may help the condition, is it the ONLY remedy? I sincerely doubt it.

I would tell the doctor that masturbation is considered a sin in your faith and ask what other methods are available to you. That would be the first step.

God Bless and thanks for asking this question,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
