Mortal or Venial
QUESTION from Matt on January 19, 2004

Dear Brother,

It's 1:30 in the morning and I have a problem. I've been dealing with the masturbation problem for about 3-5 years now. It's as big as an addiction to alcohol or drugs. I went to confession about 3 weeks ago to finally get it off of my chest. That day I promised myself I would try so hard not to do it ever again. And that I did. I tried SO HARD and lasted for 3 weeks. I was proud and thought maybe I was finally overcoming this problem. Then, I messed up... AGAIN. I'm so freakin tired of giving in and screwing up. Basically, I feel like crap.

Anyway, I need to know if what I did would be labeled mortal because I read in the Catechism that force of habit would need to be taken into consideration. Please tell me that it's not mortal. I'm sick of letting God down. All the time it's "Father forgive me." You would think he'd get sick of it.

Anyway, please gimme SOME kinda comforting words and PLEASE pray for me. Thanks. -Matt

Dear Matt:

You are not alone. This is a major problem for millions of men and women. God knows and understands your heart and your desire to overcome this addiction.

It is true that addiction can mitigate the sin, but do not risk your soul over that. We cannot be sure we are in a state of diminished responsibility and certainly cannot make that decision on our own.

Regardless of the technical state we may be in as to diminished responsibility, we need to go to confession away each time we fall.

Remember, the Sacrament of Confession is a healing sacrament as well as one of reconciliation.

The only way to overcome this addiction is by frequent confession, avoiding the near occasion of sin, developing devotions, and prayer.

It is also helpful to ask your doctor to prescribe mediation such as Zoloft and similar medications. This medication helps to control the compulsive urges.

We will be in prayer for you.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
