Dear Jim: I do not recommend that people read Malachi Martin's "views" on exorcism. Martin was a laicized dissonant priest who, in my opinion, was actively involved in at least one of the Seven things that God hates and that is an abomination, "he who sows discord among brothers" (Prov 6:16-19) He caused more people to distrust the Pope than probably any other single person, other than Lefevbre. A more accurate and trust-worthy source is Father Amorth and his books about exorcism. He is a legitimate exorcist (for the Diocese of Rome). As far as the possibility of a person not receiving deliverance from demons, it does sometimes happen that an exorcism will not free the person. This is NOT, however, because of a so-called, "perfect possession", it can be for all kinds of reasons and often for reasons we do not understand. The concept of "perfect possession" smacks of a heresy. It implies that the devil can definitively possess someone so "perfectly" that God cannot free them. This is nonsense. I have a copy of Mr. Martin's book. I use it for a doorstop.
