Job 4:12-16
QUESTION from Dean on May 12, 2004

Dear Brother,

Job 4:12-16 states:

For a word was stealthily brought to me, and my ear caught a whisper of it. In my thoughts during visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men, Fear came upon me, and shuddering, that terrified me to the bones. Then a spirit passed before me, and the hair of my flesh stood up. It paused, but its likeness I could not discern; a figure was before my eyes, and I heard a still voice

- When I was 12 yrs. old this same thing happened to me, however I did not hear a voice and nothing else occured other than I was not left with a pleasant feeling. In fact, I was absolutely frightened for many nights. So, I am inclined to believe it was a demonic spirit.

Yet, I have read in some places that these verses in Job are in reference to an Angel, other sources say that this was a Demon, or Satan. I was just curious as to what sources are correct.

Also, I shared a room with my brother at the time and was also curious as to why I was singled out as this occured only to me?

Any answers would be helpful and I would be sincerely grateful. Thank you.

ANSWER by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM on May 13, 2004

Dear Dean:

The story in Job concerns one the central themes in Job -- that humans are nothing compared to God. In meeting God on those terms we should and ought to be afraid confronted by the utter and total majesty of God.

It is only when Jesus Christ comes that we may approach God with a different kind of fear -- a fear that is a healthy respect for the greatness of God who can destroy us in a blink of an eye and a filial fear that is given to a Father, Abbas, daddy.

This experience is recorded in Job to teach us this lesson of the greatest of God and that man, in comparison, has no business whatsoever thinking of himself as anything but a pile of dirt and dust from which we were created.

The experience you had would not be this.

I cannot answer your questions, but can only give you a speculative possibility. It is not unusual for kids at that age to have paranormal experiences. In some cases this seems to be sourced in the pubescent energies taking place in the body that might produce some preternatural phenomena.

It is also possible that a demon may have "walked" by you. If this had been an angel I doubt you would have been scared to several days.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
