Evaluating Books
Dear brothers,
I would like to ask if books by Rick Warren ("The Purpose-Driven Life") and Max Lucado (such as "He Chose the Nails") are recommended for Catholics.
If not, what books do you recommend about the love of God and spiritual life? Not those written by the saints for I have read some of them (E.g. Dialogue of St. Catherine, Autobiography of St. Teresa and St. Therese, the Interior Castle, The Way of Perfection, The Ascent to Mt. Carmel and The Dark Night of the Soul) and they are sometimes difficult to comprehend because of mystical theology involved. Thanks!
God bless!

Dear James: Those two Protestant authors are not bad, but one must remain diligent for non-Catholic ideas. However, there is no need to go outside the faith. In addition to the Saints you mentioned are many contemporay Catholic writers who will be easier to read. Check out the Ignatius Press. There are hundreds of great books on spirituality there. Also St. Joseph Communications. Regardless of what other book you read the Introduction to the Devout Life by St. Francis de Sales is a MUST read for all laity. The problem with many of the Saints books is that they are written mostly for other religious. St de Sales wrote his book SPECIFICALLY TO the laity. Thus there is no need to translate the spirituality for lay life. This is truly a MUST read.
