question on movie:dawn of the dead
QUESTION from Robin on March 23, 2004

Hi,
I hope this is the right area to post this.

There is a new movie out called dawn of the dead, it states that "when hell is full the dead will walk the earth". I am wondering what your opinion on this is? Could such a thing ever really happen?

I know that this movie is someones imagination, but it sounds like a Nightmare to me. I mean if hell is really a place, and the age we are in is so sinful, could hell actually get full?

I apologize if this seems like a silly question and I thank you for all your hard work.

Dear Robin:

Thank you for your question. There is no need to apologize.

I have not heard of such a thing anywhere in Catholic teaching or from the writings of the Saints. I think it is very safe to say that this is merely the product of someone's imagination and has no basis in reality. As for hell getting full in the sense that there is no more room for more souls, this too is the stuff of imagination and has no theological basis.

After the last judgement, hell will contain a fixed number of human souls and a fixed number of demons. I suppose in that sense, and at that time, hell will be full, but not in the sense that it can contain nothing more. Rather, nothing more will be added to the number of its occupants.

I hope that this has helped.

God bless you,
