Hybrid use of Latin
QUESTION from Jack on February 24, 2004

Many Catholics are coming to prefer a sort of hybrid Mass (as seen on EWTN) which involves use of mostly vernacular, though the fixed parts of liturgy in Latin.

My question is: As an individual who prays the office, may I make my office such? I was thinking of praying the Our Father and the canticles of Mary and Zechariah in Latin (I do have knowledge of Latin, so it would not be totally in vain). I feel that this would allow me to be more in harmony with the intentions of the Council.

Do you feel this would be appropriate?

Dear Jack:

There is no problem reciting part of the Divine Office in Latin and part in English as long as the official texts are used. The General Instructions makes several references to reciting Latin or the vernacular. In fact, using Latin is encouraged.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
